Is lady luck on your side this weekend? American Social will celebrate the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1st and feature the derby’s favored flavors with drinks such as $10 Frozen Peach Juleps, $13 Kentucky Vacations and $13 Smoked Old Fashioneds.
To commemorate all the discussions about horses, guests are invited to try the Horseradish Cheddar Burger, which features two ¼ lb. smashed patties, American cheese, smash sauce, pickles, and caramelized onions – all between a fluffy pretzel bun.
The Kentucky Derby is a top rank, Grade I stakes race for 3 year old Thoroughbred horses. The race distance is one and one-quarter miles long, and it is run on the dirt racetrack at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the longest running sporting event in the United States, dating back to 1875. It was first televised in 1952 and is now celebrated around the nation every year.
According to the Kentucky Derby official website, “Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. That’s a feat that requires more than 10,000 bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail, 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint and 60,000 pounds of ice”.
Mint juleps are made with bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint. The libation became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1983.
