NARA, JAPAN – During our trip to Japan we visited Nara for a days. Nara is known for its wild sika deer, which have long been an attraction for the town and are considered a national treasure. You’ll see deer statues all around and temples you can visit. For our accommodations, we chose to stay at the Nara Visitor Center, which is an information and tourist center with rooms on the upper floors.

I was impressed with how clean the rooms were and and the great view the room had of the temples. It was also reasonably affordable during our stay although the hotel is certainly no frills. The center did offer western-style room for those who want that.

One thing to consider is that the key to the hotel must be returned when leaving, so you’ll need to be buzzed in whenever you return to the hotel at night. It is not much of a problem if you’re in Nara, since the town shuts down around 9 p.m. on most days, but could be difficult if you’re coming back into town from visiting another city nearby.

The shower worked well and so did the sink. We didn’t have any real issues with bugs since it was winter when we visited. The room was a little warm so we opened the window during our stay. The bedding sheets and comforters were room. We slept on tatami mats.

The Nara Visitor Center itself has plenty of services including free Wi-Fi, free bag storage, money exchange, tourist information, a prayer room and free wheelchair and stroller rentals daily. Cultural activities are also available including tea ceremonies, origami, calligraphy, cosplay, and more.
